Wow, this piece really brings out some mixed emotions for me - both lovely and distasteful. To me, this is a really good thing; it creates this huge impact on the viewer. If I may, I'd like to point out some interesting details that make me feel what I do and why.

The light is what really caught my eye and heart.

In the bottom left corner, the faces of the buildings are lit up by the [I'm guessing] mid-afternoon sun. I feel like the shapes that pop out help to bring out the dimensions of the photograph. Then, all across the the bottom right corner, I see that the top of each structure is clearly and distinctly outlined by the light. Pushing backwards, the haze also helps create this gorgeous fade of the buildings, and the varying shades due to their proximity. I love that pretty bronze created by the sun in the smoke, almost as if the building tops are caramel coated.

Needless to say, the angled light beams always add accent.

HOWEVER.

Although the colors and lighting do stir some appreciation and enjoyment in me, I find the fact that this cloud of smog looms predominantly over the lives of the citizens is devastating. As a small-town countryside girl, my perfect visual scene is a crystal clear blue sky, with one or two lazy clouds, over a grassy field with maybe a twinkling stream running by.

Then there is the vast layout of the city [not to mention that the perspective in this photo gives it the illusion that the grand city just spreads on forever]; it makes me wonder just how small or insignificant I really am.

Putting all these details together, I feel they combine to form this air of mystery and curiosity. Almost like this city is on some completely different world than mine. It makes me want to ask:

What goes on in this city?

How would the people of this utopia see me?

How would a citizen from this place see the open skies of the northern west coast?

Anywho, great photo; perfect focus and tone. One of the best photographers I've seen!
